As Cade zips up his wet suit, he is full of anticipation. Jumping into the water, he takes a look around and can’t believe his eyes. He is snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef! As he explores his surroundings, the stress and worry from the past year melts away.
Just over one year ago, Cade went from playing sports every day to being airlifted to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital in the Twin Cities. After discovering a tumor in his chest, doctors diagnosed Cade with leukemia.
“It was the worst day of our lives,” said Christi, Cade’s mom. “The world stopped for us. Suddenly nothing else mattered but the health and well-being of our child. The stress and financial burden are enormous. You take life one day at a time and often, one minute at a time.”
When Cade discovered he could receive a wish from Make-A-Wish Minnesota, he knew right away – he wanted to see the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Over the months to follow, the thought of Cade’s wish not only made his chemotherapy treatments easier, but also gave him the hope and happiness he needed.
“The highlight of the wish experience for me was watching Cade's smiling face. He was so happy from start to finish, especially on snorkeling day,” Christi said. “In the darkest moments of a child’s life, Make-A-Wish brings hope, happiness and new memories that families will cherish forever. We want to thank all of the volunteers and all those who contribute to this wonderful organization!"
“This trip was something I will remember for the rest of my life!” Cade said.
