Carrie was getting her son Anders ready for school when she noticed a bulge on his abdomen. After that, things happened quickly: an ultrasound at his doctor’s office showed a mass on his kidney, and he was rushed to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. There he was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor, and within a week, his left kidney was removed.
“That whole time is such a blur,” Carrie said.
Over the next year, Anders would face six rounds of radiation and six months of chemotherapy. He would also deal with the stress of a feeding tube and constant numbness in his hands and feet.
After months of worries, tests and treatments, Anders discovered his one true wish would be granted by Make-A-Wish® Minnesota! He wished to go to Walt Disney World® Resort and immediately began imagining every moment of his trip.
“Having something to look forward to lifted his spirits,” Carrie said.
This past October, Anders’ wish came true. He was off to the magical world of Disney® to spend a week exploring the parks, riding roller coasters and enjoying time with his family. He even had a dance party with the Despicable Me Minions!
“It was such a blessing,” Carrie said. “He just looked so delighted every day.”
For Carrie, Anders’ wish was much more than a family vacation. It was a respite that allowed their family to be joyous for the first time in a long time.
Every year, hundreds of Minnesota kids like Anders face the hardships of a critical illness. Click here to discover how you can bring them moments of joy with a wish come true.
